Skittles Packaging Redesign & Applications
Project Rationale
This is a packaging redesign for the classic Skittles candies which usually come in a simple plastic bag. For my redesign I decided to create a hard plastic tube container with a pop up lid at the top and a clear plastic bottom. I also wanted to keep the classic skittles branding so I included a rainbow wave wrapping around the tube and I also added a rainbow skittles sticker on the top of the lid. With my redesign I wanted to make as many improvements to the packaging that I possibly could. I decided to make the packaging into a hard plastic tube with a flat bottom for a couple reasons. The first is that it can be stored very easily on shelves due to its compact form factor letting stores have more available for purchase at any given time. The other reason is that the hard plastic shell would prevent the skittles inside from being crushed by accident. Since the tube has a pop up lid that also means that the tube is resealable which lets the user keep any remaining skittles sealed and fresh so they can eat a few skittles at a time and not worry about the rest going bad. The clear plastic bottom on the tube lets the user clearly see how many skittles are left so they will know if the tube is getting low without popping the lid. Finally, the smaller form of the packaging lets the user easily carry it around with them or keep it in their pocket and if they feel like having some skittles its very easy for them to take out the tube and pop a few skittles in their mouth. Overall this packaging redesign solves many of the issues with the original packaging and I believe the end product turned out very successful.
